The government watchdog Citizens for Responsibility & Ethics Washington charged Jen Psaki, White House press secretary, Friday with violating the Hatch Act following her comments about the Virginia gubernatorial races.
Psaki stated that Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic candidate for the governor’s seat, has the support of President Joe Biden when he was asked about it during a Thursday press conference.
Psaki stated that “I believe the President wants former Governor McAuliffe the future governor of Virginia” just weeks before the November 2 election. “We will do everything possible to help former Governor McAuliffe and we believe in his agenda .”
CREW wrote to the White House Office of Special Counsel asking for an investigation into whether Psaki had violated the Hatch Act. This federal law bars executive branch employees from any “activity directed towards the success or failure of political parties, partisan candidates, or political groups.”

“By mixing government business with support for a candidate for political office in weeks before the election, and engaging in political activities while on duty, Ms. Psaki seems to have used her formal authority or influence for interfering or affecting an election’s outcome,” the letter states.
